Your students will love
DragonflyTV's SciGirls,
Science for girls, by
girls! These DVDs
feature a group of hip,
racially diverse girls
from around the
country having fun with
science and getting
down and dirty —
whether it’s digging in the bogs, playing taiko drums,
building a doghouse, snorkeling, or playing sports. The
girls are engaging — they make science colorful and
fun, while explaining and demonstrating science
concepts and serving as role models for your female
students.
You as the teacher (or parent) will appreciate the activity guides and over four
hours of videos featuring the middle- and high school-aged girls performing
science activities ranging from building hovercrafts to experimenting with a
twirling rope to making invisible ink. There’s even a 15-minute teacher-training
case study video that shows how one program used SciGirls to teach science
inquiry to girls. It will help guide you as you and your students (or children)
carry out the activities.
SciGirls DVDs are in 2 volumes (2 hours each) with accompanying full-color
activity guides (74 and 83 pages, see samples below) on a variety of science
topics that will take your female students through the full science inquiry
process, from questioning and planning the experiment to interpreting and
communicating their results. You’ll be able to recreate the fun and exciting
science experiments in each video with your students in the classroom!
Also included in the each volume’s DVD is a set of 9 scientist profiles (see preview video clips below) featuring smart, energetic female scientists that
showcase different science careers, such as mechanical
engineering and behavioral science. Girls love to see
other strong girls and women in powerful roles, and this
positive modeling often encourages them to pursue
their own occupational goals. Play any of the profiles as
an inspirational stand-alone piece of video, or use the
accompanying “Scientist Profile” worksheet to spark
group discussion.
SciGirls will empower your girls to ask questions, communicate, and encourage
one another. These bundles support collaborative, tactile learning that sets girls
on the “science fast track” toward improved critical thinking skills, enhanced
problem solving abilities, and ultimately, career success. Read below for a
step-by-step guide to using the SciGirls bundles!

Preview Video Clips of SciGirls Experiments and Scientist Profiles:
Each of the 14 activities feature two parts:
- The first is an icebreaker activity. This is a quick and simple
hands-on experiment to engage and entertain your girls (click
the sample on the right).
- The second part of each activity is a description of either a replication or an extension of a full
science inquiry featured on the video library accompanying
the activity guide (click the sample on the right). The full
inquiry is something you may wish to do with your students,
or it can serve as a model for a related experiment you and
your girls develop. The video segments are clearly numbered
in the activity description, so you can easily find them on the
accompanying DVD menu. Each video segment runs a
maximum of seven minutes.

Step-by-step approach to using the materials in the SciGirls bundles:
- Conduct the Icebreaker activity.
- Kick off a discussion by asking a question relating to the full inquiry activity.
Gather answers, and invite the girls to think about designing (even in rough
form) an investigation related this discussion.
- Play the accompanying video for that investigation. It is suggested that you play part of the video, do the experiment with your students, then return to the end of the video afterwards to compare the results.
- Walk the girls through the parts of a full inquiry (choosing, questioning,
planning, predicting, experimenting, interpreting, communicating). Ask your
group to recall how the girls in the video fulfilled each part of the inquiry.
You may choose to have them fill out the “SciGirls Skills” worksheet as a
guide.
- With the video investigation as a model, let the girls decide what they want
to do. They can do their own version of the video inquiry, or make up their
own related investigation.

Testimonials:
“SciGirls was one of the most effective outreach projects [we’ve] ever
conducted. This project captured the attention, imagination, and support of
everyone it touched, from the educators and parents to the media and
community leaders. The SciGirls themselves LOVED it and begged for it to
continue.” -WSIU Public Broadcasting, Carbondale, IL
“I like making robots—it was so much fun! My partner Robyn and I made our
robot go around in a circle for 8 seconds. I’m glad I joined SciGirls or I wouldn’t
have a chance to do this.” -Ciera, age 13
“All week the girls worked on building their own rockets, which they launched in
front of LPB [Louisiana Public Broadcasting] studios. It was the culmination of
all their hard work and the girls loved the thrill of lift off!”
-Louisiana Public
Broadcasting, Baton Rouge, LA
“I love SciGirls! It’s a blast and we do so many awesome projects. My favorite
SciGirls trip was to the engineering school at SIU [Southern Illinois University]. We got to build hovercrafts and see one in the lake. And we are doing robots, making them spin!”
-Meredith, age 12
